As a parent, one of the most daunting tasks I faced was sleep training my eldest daughter. Like many new parents, I was determined to manage it all on my own. Looking back, I realize just how challenging those early months were, especially since she was a particularly difficult sleeper. This experience taught me a great deal about the unforeseen stresses of DIY sleep training and the significant difference that support and guidance can make. Here’s what I learned and how you can potentially ease your own sleep training journey.
Why DIY Sleep Training Can Be Stressful
Overwhelming Information: When I started sleep training, I found myself drowning in a sea of conflicting advice. Books, blogs, and online forums offered a million different methods, each promising to be the best. The abundance of options was overwhelming and often contradictory, making me second guess every decision.
High Emotional Investment: The emotional toll was more intense than I had anticipated. Hearing your little one cry, even when supporting them through it, can be extremely heart wrenching, and even more difficult if you aren’t confident that you have chosen the right approach for your baby. You constantly worry if you are doing the right thing, which only adds to the stress.
Inconsistency and Doubt: Without a clear plan or professional guidance, it’s easy to be inconsistent in applying sleep training techniques. This inconsistency can prolong the training process, leading to doubt about its effectiveness and potential negative impacts on the progression of the plan.
Lack of Support: DIY means going it alone, and the lack of professional support can be daunting. I often wished for someone to simply tell me, “You’re doing the right thing.” That kind of reassurance from a professional or even from other experienced parents would have been invaluable.
Physical Exhaustion: The process itself can be physically exhausting for parents who are already likely sleep deprived. This exhaustion can impair your ability to make sound decisions and remain patient, which are crucial in successful sleep training.
How to Improve Your DIY Sleep Training Experience
Choose One Method and Stick to It: Research different sleep training methods and choose one that best suits your family’s needs and values. Once you’ve chosen a method, stick with it consistently for a set period before making any judgments or adjustments.
Set Manageable Expectations: try to accept that progress will be gradual. Set realistic expectations about how long the process might take and celebrate small victories along the way.
Build a Support System: Whether it's online forums, local parenting groups, or friends and family, having a support network can provide emotional relief and valuable advice. Sometimes, just talking about your experiences can significantly reduce stress.
Consult with Professionals: If possible, consult a pediatrician or a sleep consultant. Remember, it’s ok to ask for help! These professionals can offer guidance tailored to your little one’s needs, which can simplify the process and provide reassurance.
Take Care of Yourself: Your well being is crucial in the sleep training process. Ensure you are getting enough rest, eating well, and finding time for yourself. If you’re calm and rested, you’re more likely to handle the challenges of sleep training with patience and clarity.
Document the Process: Keeping a sleep diary can help you track patterns, improvements, or setbacks. This documentation can be useful for understanding what works and what doesn’t, making it easier to adjust tactics if necessary.
Be Flexible and Patient: Every child is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Being flexible and patient, while always keeping your little one’s best interests at heart, was key to finding our way through those tough nights.
