Dress Right, Sleep Tight: 8 Tips for Dressing Your Baby for Night Sleep

Updated: Dec 4, 2023

When it comes to dressing your baby for nighttime, there's a balance between ensuring they are cozy and making sure they're safe. The primary concerns for parents are preventing overheating and ensuring that the baby sleeps soundly. Here's a guide to help you choose the right nighttime attire for your little one.

Consider the Room Temperature

Before dressing your baby, check the room's temperature. A baby room thermometer can be a handy tool. Ideally, a baby's room should be between 68°F and 72°F (20°C and 22°C). Based on the room's temperature, you can decide how to dress your baby. The below chart can help you decide how to layer babies clothing based on room temperature

Using the 'One More Layer' Rule

A useful rule of thumb is that babies generally need one more layer than adults. If you're sleeping comfortably with a light sheet, your baby might be comfortable in a onesie and a light sleep sack.

Choose Breathable Fabrics

Natural fibers such as cotton are great as they allow the baby's skin to breathe. Avoid synthetic materials that might trap heat.

The Safe Alternative: Sleep Sacks

Sleep sacks or wearable blankets are excellent for ensuring babies stay warm without the risks associated with loose blankets.

Regularly Check for Overheating

Touch the back of your baby's neck or their tummy. If it feels sweaty or hotter than usual, your baby might be too warm. Other signs include damp hair, flushed cheeks, and rapid breathing. If you notice any of these, reduce a layer.

Feet Should be Warm, not Hot

Cold hands are normal for babies, but cold feet might indicate that your baby is too cold. Ensure the feet are warm, but not hot or sweaty.

Avoid Hats and Loose Fittings

Hats can trap heat and also pose a risk if they cover the baby's face during sleep. Similarly, avoid very loose-fitting pajamas, which can also become a hazard.

Simplicity is Key

While cute and fancy nightwear might be tempting, simple and functional is best. Avoid items with strings, ties, or small parts.

Don’t stress!

Choosing how to dress your baby for sleep is one of the many choices you'll face as a new parent. Even though there's a lot to think about, don't let it keep you up at night. Parents need their rest too! Make sure your baby is safe, and try out different sleep clothes to see what's best. A good night's sleep for both of you could be closer than you think.
